Recommended Supplies (and Additional Links)
| When stocking your Storm Shelter / Safe Room and planning for a tornado, please remember that you should
have enough supplies in your shelter to last you for two to three days. Depending on how bad the destruction
is in your area, you may have to survive without assistance until first responders and emergency crews can reach
your Storm Shelter / Safe Room.
Stocking your Storm Shelter / Safe Room for a tornado requires a balance between available space vs. the number of
people that will fit in your Storm Shelter / Safe Room and your emergency supplies. Here are some of the recommended
items to keep stocked in your Storm Shelter / Safe Room:
At a bare minimum, you should have:
- Medications – three days of any medications currently prescribed (Keep them safe from kids)
- Emergency Radio – a hand crank AM/FM/WB(NOAA)emergency radio
- Water – three 20oz bottles of water per person
- Food – three days of any long shelf-life food that doesn’t need to be heated
- Pet Food – Don’t forget about your pets!
- First Aid Kit – a basic first aid kit
- Flashlights – one flashlight per adult with extra batteries
- Blankets – one blanket per person (Store the blankets in a bag when not in use)
- Kids Supplies – three days of diapers, wipes, baby food or formula, etc. as needed
- Extra Clothes – one set of extra clothes for each person (includes closed toe shoes)
- Portable Toilet/Toilet Paper – Portable Toilet/Toilet Paper and bags for sanitation
- Mobile Phone Charger - a hand crank mobile phone charger
- Important papers – copies of any important papers
- Activities – activities to keep your kids from worrying about the storms
- Hammer & Multi-tool – to help clear debris or to bang on the shelter wall
- Bug Out Bag/72-Hour Kit – If space is available, store a 72-Hour Kit for any emergency
